Re-imagining an autoinjector

Project Description

Our client is a well regarded brand of B12 shots. Their unique formula helped drive nationwide sales. Determined to fuel their success, they aim to broaden their offering to include devices. I was invited to imagine a design of an autoinjector, easy to use with a lifestyle sensibility (read: non medical).

Role

Lead Designer

To design a self injector that fits with a lifestyle, not a medical need

Understanding Function

Autoinjectors are a class of medical device that comes under the FDA’s scrutiny. This additional layer of complexity made for an interesting design project. To design an injector that’s easy to use, doesn’t look clinical and functions with a high level of reliability of a regulated medical device.

We believe that change is predicated upon deep understanding of the present. To build a new autoinjector, I have to quickly understand how the best in class product works. Deconstructed a leading product and assess its functionality; a tear down.

The Inspiration and user

The client provided a rough idea of what they were looking for and by using mood boards, we were able to narrow down the exact ‘feeling’ they wanted to go for.

Extreme, Refined but rugged.

The clients main customer base were extreme athletes, or those aspiring to this degree of excellence.

Developing a concept

Understanding the architecture of how an autoinjector works, it’s key components and features allowed for some sketch iterations and concept development.

The design features were focused on at home, B12 sports injections, and the injector was to invoke a feeling of confidence, efficacy and style.

The final design provided a rugged, refined aesthetic, while maintaining the efficacy of competitive injectors.

Quality of life improvements were also added:

  1. A clear window for injection progress, but not showing the needle

  2. An improved form for grip to give confidence

  3. Textural differences to provide a sense of quality and attention to details.
